Key Considerations When Buying and Launching Outdoor Digital Signage

Nov 24, 2020
Digital signage is a highly effective means of communication between businesses and their customers. While often used for in-store advertising, it can reach an even wider audience when used outdoors and can be a worthwhile addition to your business’ marketing strategy. Before you buy, it’s important to research your options. Not all digital signage is suitable for outdoor use. To get the most out of your efforts, here are a few key things to consider when buying and launching outdoor digital signage.

1. Sunlight Readability

sunlight readability

First and foremost, you’ll need to make sure that your outdoor digital signage is sunlight readable, especially if you’re going to place it somewhere with high sun exposure. Your display must be able to compete with the sun’s intensity. While they are relatively inexpensive, the traditional LED TVs you find at an electronics store won’t be bright enough for full sunlight. One option would be to invest in a high-brightness LCD or an LED sign. Their brightness can be enough to combat the sun’s intensity at times, but there are also some drawbacks. For example, both technologies require a lot of power to operate and produce a high thermal output. This can translate to high operating costs and a greater risk of malfunctioning if they overheat.

The good news is, Sun Vision Display’s new digital signage solution provides excellent sunlight readability without using excessive amounts of energy. How, you ask? With reflective color LCD technology. Reflective color LCDs reflect the sunlight via a mirror-like layer that is installed behind the liquid crystal layer (instead of a backlight). The brighter the sunlight shines on the display, the brighter the display appears – turning sunlight into a solution rather than fighting against it. What’s more, the absence of a backlight reduces the power consumption of Sun Vision Display signs to less than 5 watts, which is about 95% less power than high-brightness LCDs and LED signs!

2. Weather Concerns

Another huge consideration is how the outdoor digital signage will function in different weather conditions. For outdoor functionality, you’ll need something that can withstand fluctuating temperatures, humidity, wind and impact. Certain types of outdoor digital signage require a bulky thermal management system to manage the heat they produce. This issue is further compounded when you add direct sunlight into the mix. Other display technologies simply can’t handle a wide enough range of temperatures. For example, E-ink displays’ operating temperature range is between 0C to +50C. This is too limiting for some regions of the world.

Sun Vision Display signs, which use reflective color LCD technology, are an excellent outdoor solution. They offer UV-resistance, a native operating temperature range of -20C to +70C, and there’s no backlight to cool down with a ventilator fan. They can be further ruggedized with water-proof enclosures and protective cover lenses and films for increased impact resistance, in case of hailstorms or vandalism. As a cover lens manufacturer, New Vision Display is able to help you build an all-weather signage solution.

3. Image Quality

Another important factor to consider when buying and launching outdoor digital signage is image quality. To best represent your brand, you should choose a signage solution with a high resolution and image quality. Traditional LED signs have a relatively low resolution and are only useful for simple text and graphics. MicroLED signs can produce stunning, high-resolution graphics nearing that of LCD displays, but their price point is roughly 10 times that of LCD signage, making them out of the question for many small businesses. Many e-paper display technologies are unable to play video. Sun Vision Display signs can play both images and video in full-HD resolution (1920x720) and 16.7 million colors. As mentioned previously, they also use sunlight to their advantage – getting brighter the more sunlight shines on them. As an added benefit, Sun Vision Display signs produce almost zero blue-light emissions, making them very easy on your eyes.

4. Operating Costs

operation costs

Every type of outdoor digital signage is going to have a different up-front cost. While your budget might only allocate for an inexpensive display, you need to consider long-term operating costs. Since high-brightness LEDs require larger amounts of voltage to work in varying light conditions, the energy cost can get extremely high very quickly. High-brightness backlit LCDs are also significantly expensive to operate. By opting for reflective LCDs that use less than 5 watts, you’ll use 95% less energy than other outdoor digital signage technology and save money on long-term operating costs. Since there’s no backlight, no LED decay, and a low power output, you’ll also reap the benefits of an elongated life cycle and will therefore not have to replace your signage as often.

5. Software/CMS

Regardless of if you’ll have the display be static or dynamic, it’s essential to have a good content management system (CMS) in place. Since most outdoor digital signage is hard to physically access once it’s set up, you’ll want something that can be done remotely on a mobile device or computer. Make sure that your CMS gives you access to multiple screens at once and allows you to change, manage and schedule your content for specific times throughout the day.
